Parent and Grandparent Super Visa

What is a super visa?

The super visa is granted to parents and grandparents of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident who wish to stay in Canada for more than two years. Not all parents and grandparents are eligible for this visa, but those who are granted it can stay in Canada for ten years before having to renew it.

If you are a Canadian citizen interested in obtaining a super visa for your parents or grandparents, continue reading to learn more about the process and how to get started.

Who is eligible?

If you have a child or grandchild who is already a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada, you are eligible for a Super Visa. If the parent or grandparent has dependents, they cannot be granted this visa but can seek sponsorship through other channels, such as the family class sponsorship programme.

What are the process and requirements?

The first step in applying for the super visa is to be invited by your child or grandchild who is already a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. The invitation letter must also demonstrate the applicant's and inviter's relationship. The child/grandchild will then sign a contract stating that they will be responsible for their parents' upkeep. The document must also demonstrate that they are financially stable enough to support the applicant by earning the minimum required income. In addition, the applicant will be subjected to immigration medical examinations to determine their eligibility for a one-year Canadian medical insurance policy. Before being granted a super visa, applicants will be required to apply for a temporary resident visa.

The applicant must be connected to their country of origin

The applicant must show proof of their financial and family situation

The applicant must state clearly the reason for the visit

The applicant must tell the officers about the political and economic stability of their origin country

Invitations from their child/grandchild

Super Visa and Temporary Resident Visa

The temporary resident visa (TRV) is a necessary condition for the issuance of a Super visa. If they are from a country that is exempt from providing a TRV before obtaining a Super visa, they are exempt from this requirement. The TRV and Super visa make it easier for parents and grandparents to travel back to their home country and return within the time frame specified on the visa. They will not be required to reapply for TRV at each visit, but they will be required to pay a small fee for multiple entries when applying for the Super visa.

Those who are exempted from obtaining a TRV before applying for a Super visa will be given an official letter from the Canadian government that will serve as a TRV. This letter will serve as their pass, allowing them to enter the country for the next two years on each visit.
